Organic Functional Mushrooms: The Natural Choice*
Why You Should Choose Organic Functional Mushrooms*
Consumers’ standards for the food and supplements we put in our bodies are a growing concern, including when it comes to organic functional mushrooms.* Non-organic agricultural practices require a lot of nasty chemicals to keep harvests consistent. Not only are these non-organic farms using nasty chemicals; more often than not, the growing technique is detrimental to the land in a number of ways.
Organic farmers avoid chemical pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. But they still need a way to control pests and keep their crops thriving. This dips into the realm of permaculture: the practice of developing agricultural ecosystems that are sustainable and self-sufficient. Organic farming is not only chemical-free, but the practices are a lot more sustainable and earth friendly. It’s one more step to say that “we care about our planet, our bodies and our health!”

So, What About Organic Functional Mushrooms?
Mushroom farming is pretty different than vegetable farming and is a new field in the United States. First of all, it is mostly done indoors, in a much more controlled environment. But no matter what kind of farming it is, it’s a good idea to be aware of where it came from. Organic standards for mushrooms are just as important as for plant crops and a lot of times they are intertwined.
Unlike plants, mushrooms do not make their own food. They metabolize it— their enzymes have the awesome power of breaking down a multitude of compounds into simpler nutrients. Most mushrooms rely on agricultural waste for their food source, so it’s important that those plants are grown in an ecologically friendly, toxic chemical free, certified organic environment. In buying organic mushrooms, you are supporting a greater system of organic farming that weaves into organic plant farming as well.
To be certified organic, traceability is very important. It is important to be able to trace every single ingredient that goes into the process of growing organic mushrooms, and that also includes the cleaners used to mop the floors or to wash the dishes! Every ingredient must come with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) that serves as proof that a third part lab has tested these ingredients for chemical, biological contaminants and also DNA sequenced it to make sure it is what you say it is.
Although fungi generally have the ability to break down chemicals with their enzymatic capabilities, there is still a high possibility that toxic chemicals would contaminate the mushrooms you're growing. Heavy metals like aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, and lead are in their simplest elemental form, and therefore cannot be broken down further. If a fungi is metabolizing substrate where these metals are present, they will be absorbed and hyper-accumulated into the mushroom it eventually grows leading to potential heavy metal toxicity if those mushrooms are then extracted and concentrated to make a potent extract.
Stay Safe: Go Organic
So let’s recap: Organic Functional Mushrooms mean:
- Supporting Certified Organic plant/mushroom agriculture to limit the amount of toxic chemicals in our soils, waters, people, and to protect the biodiversity of life.
- Transparency and traceability to track down EXACTLY what is going in each batch of your organic mushroom extracts.
- No toxic chemicals, biologicals, or heavy metals entering your body!*
- Creating sustainable systems to empower the human race towards a brighter, cleaner and healthier future!
At Mushroom Revival, we only use certified organically grown mushrooms that are cultivated indoors when possible (some of our ingredients, like chaga, can only be responsibly wild crafted in clean areas, in our case— Siberia). In addition to our cultivation standards, we go the extra mile to make sure our mushrooms have been routinely tested for heavy metals, biological contaminants, chemical contaminants and testing main compounds such as alpha glucans, Beta glucans, Cordycepin, adenosine, ganoderic acid, and more!
In 2019, we became the only Certified Organic Cordyceps militaris mushroom producer west of the Atlantic. We take pride in this fact because we want to show the world that this not only can be done, but should be the only way mushrooms should be produced. We want to raise the bar, so the general public gets only the best supplement possible, and the planet can benefit as well!
